This is a period of work was made during my time as Artist in Residence at National Gallery of Zimbabwe, when I started doing community based work. The people I started working with were the Zimbabwe Book Team who produce books collaboratively with over 600 villages in Zimbabwe and Annie Holmes from Capricorn Video Unit in Harare.
From working with the Book Team there was a skills exchange where I taught illustration to members of the team and communities while from them I learned the process of working collaboratively and collectively, which I then developed into my work with other communities. I took that and created a new methodology for working with other communities in southern and eastern Africa, mainly in Zimbabwe and Kenya.
Some of these projects include: One Community, One Sweat; Kamila Band; Bakhayo West Joint Women’s Groups in Action; and It’s Good For Us: community self management in Dadaab.
